retro-futuristic devices in Tech Wizard Mike’s children’s picture books

Retro futurism is a celebration of people’s interpretation of the future, as depicted in the past. It’s the imagination of the future from different vantage points throughout history.

Technology plays a minimal role in my friendship books but when some kind of device does come into play, I send my illustrators examples of retro-futurism to use as references.

I like to use retrofuturistic devices in my children’s picture books and digital citizenship picture books.

Why? I just think they are visually 👀 much more fun than any contemporary device (and the illustrators enjoy drawing them).

This was originally going to be page #7 for the Ziggy Book

This page was extremely well-rendered (and we will talk more about it in a future blog post) but frankly, I thought Ziggy’s computer was boring 🥱

I asked Tanya to replace Ziggy’s computer with a retro futuristic computer.

To show Tanya what I meant, I sent her a reference image (along with a request for some other revisions):

And here is the result:

Tanya’s Sketch (which I happily signed off on; no changes needed)
Completed illustration (which is in the book)

modus operandi

I search the web for reference images…

After I find something that looks fun & interesting and would be representative to the story such as this one…

I’ll then send it to the illustrator, and he or she will create their own version of it…

This is one of the “friendship lessons” in Ziggy Wants to Know… Where’s Chippy?

Illustrator Dinnie used this image as a reference…

…as a basis for this sketch ✍️ :

After a series of revisions including changing the human villainess to a cat villainess, we wound up with this…

Dinnie and I are working on this story even as we speak!
